Summarizing
is how we take larger selections of text and reduce them to their bare
essentials: the gist, the key ideas, the main points that are worth noting and
remembering. We strip away the extra verbiage and extraneous examples. We focus
on the heart of the matter. We try to find the key words and phrases that, when
uttered later, still manage to capture the gist of what we've read. We are
trying to capture the main ideas and the crucial details necessary for
supporting them.

Reading Strategies: Scanning
Scanning
is a technique we often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or
dictionary. We are search for key words or ideas. Scanning involves moving your
eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also
used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer our
questions. Once you've scanned the document, we might go back and skim it.
When
we scanning, we start look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers,
letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are
bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes we
will see the author will put key ideas in the margin.
Reading Strategies: Skimming
Skimming
is quickly identifying the main ideas of a text. When we read the newspaper, we
are probably not reading it word-by-word. Skimming is done at a speed three to
four times faster than normal reading. Usually we often skim when we have lots
of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when we want to
see if an article may be of interest in our research.
There
are many strategies that we can be use when skimming. Sometime we read the
first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as
they move down the page or screen. This technique is useful when we are seeking
specific information rather than reading for comprehension. Skimming works well
to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables,
and charts.
